Taylor Swift Snags 8 Grammy Nominations

When the Grammy Award candidates were announced on December 2 for their 52nd Annual Awards show during a music special televised live from Los Angeles at Club Nokia, Taylor Swift received eight Grammy Award nominations. Only Beyonce had more with her ten nominations.

What was significant was that Swift was nominated in three three different top categories that represent different musical genres.

Swift’s latest album, Fearless, has been nominated as Overall Album of Year. The category also includes Big Whiskey & the Groogux King by the Dave Matthews Band, The Fame by Lady Gaga, The E.N.D. By Black Eyed Peas and I Am… Sasha Fierce by Beyonce.

“You Belong With Me,” a track from the Fearless album, has been nominated for Record of Year, and is going up against “Halo” by Beyonce, “I Gotta Feeling” by the Black Eyed Peas, “Poker Face” by Lady Gaga, and “Use Somebody” by Kings of Leon.

“You Belong With Me,” written by Swift along with Liz Rose, has been nominated for Song of Year, along with “Poker Face” by Lady Gaga, “Pretty Wings” by Maxwell, “Single Ladies” by Beyonce and “Use Somebody” by Kings of Leon.

In addition, Swift’s album Fearless has been nominated as Best Country Album, while “You Belong With Me” has been nominated for Best Pop Female Performance. Swift and Rose’s “White Horse,” has been nominated as Best Country Song. The album track also earned a nomination for Swift for Best Female Vocal Performance. “Breathe,” another track from Swift’s Fearless album also earned a nomination for Swift and Colbie Caillat in the category Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals.

After realizing that she had earned eight nominations Swift said, I was freaking out. I started to jump up and down and freak out, Swift said when speaking to The Associated Press. Honestly I never could have predicted getting eight nominations. I am blown away, ecstatic and very thankful.

Swift added, it’s the ultimate honor for the Grammys to recognize me. All that I know is when I write in my journal about this tonight it’s going to be all in capital letters as well as underlined four times with lots of exclamation points. I never imagined I would get to write in my journal about this.

When asked about the possibility of winning her very first Grammy Award, Swift replied, the thought of winning is something you absolutely daydream about.

The only country singers that were featured in the telecast were Dwight Yoakam and Sugarland. The only country category announced on the air that night was Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. Yoakam announced the nominees, which included “It Happens,” by Sugarland, “Cowgirls Don’t Cry,” by Brooks & Dunn, “I Run to You,” by Lady Antebellum, “Here Comes Goodbye,” from the group Rascal Flatts and “Chicken Fried,” by the Zac Brown Band.

Sugarland performed a holiday song “Coming Home” from their album Gold and Green in a segment of the show outside of Club Nokia.

When the telecast’s host LL Cool J asked Kristian Bush and Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland about their nomination, Jennifer Nettles replied that the biggest night of all in music was the Grammys. When we win country music awards it is a very big honor, but to be nominated for Grammys- that is nice.

Although Swift didn’t attend the Grammy nominations concert, she did still manage to garner a lot of attention. The opening performance by LL Cool J mentioned her. It’s also clear that there is at least one legend of music that has not forgotten Kayne West interrupting Swift’s acceptance speech during MTV’s Video Music Awards.

Ringo Star and Smokey Robinson announced Swift’s “You Belong With Me,” had been nominated as Record of the Year. Robinson joked and said, Taylor don’t worry, Kayne West isn’t here.

The Grammy Awards 52nd annual show will take place in Los Angeles at Staples Center on January 31.
